Photography Classes this Summer

Digital 101: Photography and the Computer
With Photo Trip and Exhibit

Summer Class Batch 1: April 4–5 (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)
Summer Class Batch 2: April 18–19 (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)

This workshop, designed for digital-camera users who want to learn the basics of photography, discusses the following topics:

- Factors affecting photographic output
- Basic understanding of light
- The digital camera and its functions
- Exposure setting
- Taking better pictures, and improving the way one looks at pictures
- Basic image manipulation and output considerations

To further develop the participants’ knowledge, this workshop entails shooting assignments, critiquing, working in a digital darkroom, and a photo clinic. It also includes the following:

Photo trip on the first day

As an immediate hands-on session, a photo trip will be organized for the participants. Participants are encouraged to bring an extra battery/charger. They may also choose to bring tripods and other accessories, as well as a change of clothes and drinking water.

Photo exhibit after the workshop

As a culminating activity, the best photographs taken during the class will be displayed at The Alcove photo gallery after the workshop. Final exhibit schedule will be announced during the class.

Requirement
Digital camera, preferably SLR

Jay Alonzo has been teaching photography for more than 12 years and is now considered as one of the country’s leading photography instructors. Since 2001, he has been regularly conducting photography classes at The Alcove (Filipinas Heritage Library’s photography nook), as well as for such clients as the Department of Agriculture, Liwayway Marketing, Holcim Philippines, Shell, Procter & Gamble, and Microsoft.

In between classes, Jay is involved in photo shoots for hotels, restaurants, and other tourist destinations. Also, Jay is also a photo contributor for High Life and Mabuhay (Philippine Airline’s in-flight magazine).

Joining fee, discount, and freebies
P4,000 inclusive of handouts, lunch, transportation, computer use, and certificate. Cash or check payment can be made at the library or through bank deposit.

Due to the limited number of slots, interested participants are requested to preregister by placing a partial payment of at least P500 (nonrefundable) a week before class starts. Those who pay in full on or before the deadline will be given a 5 percent discount. All participants should pay the full amount on the first day of class.

Upon completion of the workshop, each participant will get a YKL/Fujifilm printing voucher and a one-day pass to the library’s photography book collection. Photography magazines and other raffle prizes await lucky participants.

Lighting for Portrait Photography

Lighting for Portrait Photography
October 11 and 18, 2008 (9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.)

This two-day seminar covers the basics of lighting for portrait shots, a popular application in photography. This course aims to reduce the complexity of light and illumination to a learnable level, and show its application in photographing people as subjects.

The course allows participants to:
- Learn the fundamental principles of lighting and its importance in creating better portraits
- Master the primary controllable characteristics of light and see how they apply to portraiture
- Become familiar with the different in-studio lighting tools, both standard and improvised, in order to achieve desired lighting results
- Master the systematic way of setting up lighting for portrait shots using artificial light sources

Requirements
- Must have taken Primer on Lighting workshop or equivalent course
- Camera with manual exposure control, preferably digital
- Optional: exposure-flash meter, tripod
