IMG_5455 2

IMG_5456 2

Be transported into the heart of the Burmese rainforest for a rare up-close glimpse at the gentle and intelligent elephants. Here, you can see the world’s largest land animals at work and at play with their riders, the mahouts.

Macho Beasts at Work

Be amazed by the elephants’ incredible feats of strength; these gargantuan beasts can lift and push logs the weight of two grown men! See how they marry intelligence and might to complete herculean tasks of moving giant logs.

Never too Big to Play

And what awesome elephant show doesn’t have amazing tricks in the trunk? Watch these playful giants as they play dead, ‘steal’ food, and demonstrate their ability to spray far and wide. Take cover if you plan to take the front and centre seats!

The show ends with a token feeding session, so be sure to stick around for some trunk-touching fun! SOURCE.

Another highlight in our trip to Singapore Zoo is the Elephants at Work and Play Show. My hats off to the trainers who trained the elephants very well. I would say, it was a good and fun show! The kids had fun!

IMG_5457

There were a few rain showers while we were watching, good thing they didn’t stop the show!

IMG_5454

You can watch the Elephants at Work and Play Show at the Elephants of Asia daily at 11.30am and 3.30pm. This show is weather permitting.

I highly recommend it especially for the kids who love animals. Elephants at Work and Play was a wondeful and funny show! ♥

IMG_5452

If you love the wet, wacky and wonderful, this is the Singapore Zoo show for you! Watch our mischievous California sea lion superstar, show off a personality that matches its size as it gets up to its usual antics.

It’s a high-energy splash parade filled with many special moments that will tickle your funny bone and tug at your heartstrings at the same time. Get closer to the world of our amazing maritime maverick and learn about how we can all do our part to save the oceans.

Super soaker alert!!!

Stay behind after the show if you need a cold shower. The trainers never get enough of inviting everyone down to enjoy a big splashy goodbye wave or two from our Splash Safari star. SOURCE.

While I was planning for our visit to Singapore Zoo, I made sure that we would be able to watch the show. Good thing the weather was cooperative since it didn’t rain when it was time for us to watch the Splash Safari Show. We watched the 10:30AM show!

IMG_9572

The kids and so are the adults liked the show so much. It was nice to watch the Sea Lion.

The venue of the Splash Safari Show is at Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre. There are two shows daily – at 10.30am and 5.00pm only. They usually start on time. Also note that the Splash Safari Show is weather permitting so make sure that the weather is fine before you go there.

I highly recommend it! (*wink*)

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo – Rainforest Kidzworld

Rainforest Kidzworld offers a multitude of activities that encourage kids to satisfy their curiosity, learn through self discovery, and simply play like they don’t have a care in the world.

Whether they want to have a splashing good time in a watery playground, spend time with farmyard animals, take a rainforest challenge, visit the interesting residents of the kampung house or ride a wild animal carousel, there’s always plenty to see, do and experience.

I was so looking forward to this area since my friend, Thea blogged about it a couple of months ago. She told me to bring bathing suits for the girls. I’m so glad I did because they had the time of their lives! ♥

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo – Our KFC Lunch

Everyone was starving as soon as we arrived the Rainforest Kidzworld zone. So we decided to have lunch at KFC. WOOT!

IMG_5471

IMG_5473

There are two branches of KFC inside Singapore Zoo, here are the branches:

1. Zoo Entrance
- 10.00am – 6.30pm (Monday – Friday).
- 8.30am – 7.00pm (Weekends & Public Holidays)

2. Rainforest Kidzworld
- 10.00am – 5.30pm (Monday – Friday)
- 9.30am – 6.00pm (Weekends & Public Holidays)

The line was so long so some of us ordered food, while the others waited for a couple of tables to free up. As soon as the food arrived, we all gobbled up the chicken, fries and fried fish in a couple of minutes. YUM-MO!! ♥

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo – Wild Africa

Fashioned after the grassy plains in Africa, this south-eastern flank of the Zoo has grass-grazing mammals living alongside their deadly predators.

There’s nothing like the thrill of traversing through Wild Africa on a safari tour especially when hooves, horns and claws aren’t all you can expect to see. For instance, there’s a little colony of animals you might want to check out. Meet our East African’s underground darlings who feel no pain. SOURCE.

Everyone was a bit tired already after checking out almost half of the zoo so we decided to ride the tram on our way to Rainforest Kidzworld. Before reaching that area, we were able to pass by the WILD AFRICA! This area was very interesting since we saw animals that we don’t see everyday.

IMG_9581
African Lion

The king of the jungle awaits you as he guards over his kingdom from his throne on one of the vantage points in Wild Africa. Surrounded by a pride of lionesses in their habitat, the African lion sanctuary recreates the scene of a lush clearing in the woods surrounded by a moat. Step up for a whisker-close view of the big cats from our indoor viewing gallery where you can see them guarding their territory undaunted by the curious human eyes observing them. The lions and lionesses may not need to hunt in the Zoo but you can still witness their aggression during the token feeding session at 1.40pm daily. SOURCE.

Other animals that can be found in this area are…

White Rhinoceros

Holding the title of the second largest land mammal, a white rhinoceros can charge at 50 kilometres per hour. That’s as fast as a city car! Couple that with their famous horns and you won’t want to stand in the way!

These gentle giants are great fun to feed with their wide square lips. Experience it for yourself, first hand, when you hand-feed them during the daily token feeding session at 1.15pm. SOURCE.

Cheetah

Famed for being the fastest animal on land, the cheetah can go from zero to 60 kilometres per hour in three strides. At top speed of 112 kilometres per hour and non-retractable claws that act like spikes on running shoes, you can say these fast cats are natural born sprinters! SOURCE.

Zebra

The zebra’s striking black and white stripes make it one of the most distinct inhabitants of the African savannah. It has been suggested that the stripes of zebras protect the animals by confusing predators and making them less distinct as individuals when in a herd. SOURCE.

Giraffe

Giraffes are well-known the world over because of their height, thanks to their super long necks. Their attractive appearance and gentle demeanour also easily make them one of the most popular animals. Experience this firsthand when they wrap their long dark tongues around their snacks during the token feeding session at 10.45am, 1.35pm and 3.30pm daily! SOURCE.

Wild Africa was definitely an interesting zone for us. It was wonderful!

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo – Free Ranging Urang Utan Island

One thing you will never miss in Singapore Zoo is the Free Ranging Urangutan Island. It is right there in the middle of the zoo. It was beautiful.

Singapore Zoo is the first zoo in the world to feature a free-ranging area for the orang utans, our flagship species.

Our orang utan habitat is one of our biggest exhibits and certainly the most unique. Two free-ranging areas, an island and a boardwalk complete with tall trees and thick vegetation, have been created for visitors to view these fascinating creatures. The absence of walls and the inclusion of the raised boardwalk allow guests to have an almost entirely 360 degree view at an elevated angle. SOURCE.

IMG_5443

To simulate the natural rainforest environment, multi-tier climbing platforms have been constructed for these arboreal creatures to swing, climb and play around. These double up as escape routes when fights break out. Our orang utan habitat is also equipped with behavioural enrichment devices to ensure these smart apes stay intellectually and physically engaged every day. SOURCE.

IMG_9663

You can have your photographs taken with these amazing apes at the following times:
- Island free-ranging area at 11.00am and 3.30pm daily
- Boardwalk free-ranging area at 4.30pm daily

The next time we visit Singapore Zoo, we would stay in this area a little longer. I would love to observe the Urangutans playing in their area. ♥

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo – Gibbon Island

Gibbon Island is one of the zones in Singapore Zoo that we will never forget! Why? Check this out…

The primates along Gibbon Island are vocalists extraordinaires! Come listen to their cacophony of cries, in response to pre-recorded calls during the token feeding session at 1.40pm daily. There are the black howler monkeys, with their deep throaty cries, gibbons with their territorial whoops and red-ruffed lemurs with their signature ‘barks’. SOURCE.

IMG_5432

This zone was definitely the noisiest! Ha!

On our way to the Splash Safari Adventure Show, we passed by Gibbon Island. The lake was beautiful, thanks to the pink flamingoes that were hanging around the island. So cute!

IMG_5433

These flamboyant orange-pink birds reside in the waters surrounding Gibbon Island. Watch them as they stand perfectly balanced on one leg. This interesting behaviour helps them conserve body heat since they spend long hours in the water.

Within this area, you get to see which way to go. So you need not worry about getting lost!

IMG_5434

The zoo was so large, we really got worried that we might lose our way. Good thing the map is with us. And besides, the zoo has a lot of signages all over so it was very “tourist-friendly”.

Other animals that you will see in this area include…

- Red-ruffed Lemur

Red-ruffed lemurs warn each other with a complex system of at least 12 different vocalisations. These alarm calls can be low grunts, gurgling sounds or cackle-like roars. They can even recognise the alarm calls of the other subspecies, the black and white ruffed lemurs.

Red-ruffed lemurs are among the most critically endangered species amongst the primates. Deforestation, hunting and the pet trade threaten the future survival of the red-ruffed lemur. SOURCE.

- White-handed & Agile Gibbon

Gibbons are usually monogamous. A male and female form a closely-bonded breeding pair and live in a cohesive family group that includes their offspring. To strengthen their ties and re-establish territory, gibbons usually begin each day by singing a loud and lyrical duet that resonates through the forest. SOURCE.

- Black Howler Monkey

One of the loudest animals around, the black howler monkey is practically the sirens of the jungle with their thunderous calls, which can be heard 5 kilometres away! Vocal communication forms an important part of their social behaviour. SOURCE.

Gibbon Island is definitely interesting! Watch out for more about Singapore Zoo soon! (*wink*)

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo – Treetops Trail

Take a sip from a cocktail at Treetops Trail as you admire the siamang’s gymnastic skills as it swings on the trees. Feast your ears on the melody of the running stream which flows from the highlands to the marshes of the tropical rainforest. – SOURCE.

Our first stop in Singapore Day Zoo is the Treetops Trail. It was near the entrance of the zoo. And look who greeted us before we started the trail…

IMG_5417

IMG_9534

IMG_9541

I love that the trail was surrounded by trees and whenever we looked, we would see a pretty bird or a monkey.

IMG_5421

There were a lot of people in this area though, so off we went to follow the trail and entered more in to the Singapore Zoo.

2012 Summer in Singapore: Exploring Singapore Day Zoo

Our next stop in our trip to Singapore last summer was Singapore Day Zoo. It was our first time so we are all very excited, especially the kids! We hired a van on our way to the zoo which took us not more than 30minutes. There was no traffic and our trip was a breeze. So thankful!

When we arrived at the zoo, the line for the tickets was not that long. But it gave us time to take a few photos at the entrance.

IMG_5411

IMG_5416

And when we were done, we started our tour immediately.

IMG_5417 IMG_9534

Wherever we looked, every animal was a beautiful sight to see. But our favorite parts were the two shows that we watched.

(**Will blog about it more soon**)

We were so lucky that it didn’t rain much which made us see almost the entire park.

IMG_5445

And thanks to this map, we didn’t get lost in this huge place.

There are a lot in store for us at the zoo! So watch out for more stories and photos soon! (*wink*)
